Sierra Leone’s Dr. Abdul Karim Bangura holds the esteemed title of the world’s most educated man, boasting an impressive array of academic achievements across various disciplines. Dr. Bangura, recognized as an author, academic administrator, researcher, and scientist, has earned multiple degrees, including a B.A. in International Studies, an M.A. in International Affairs, an M.S. in Linguistics, and Ph.D.s in Political Science, Development Economics, Linguistics, Computer Science, and Mathematics.
His scholarly contributions are equally remarkable, with Dr. Abdul Karim having authored and/or edited 35 books and over 250 scholarly articles. Born on August 26, 1953, in Bo, Southern Province of Sierra Leone, Dr. Abdul Karim traces his lineage to the Bangura Chiefs of Port Loko, Northern Sierra Leone, with his father, Alie Kunda Bangura, being an engineer. In an interview, Dr. Bangura expressed that his late father serves as a profound source of inspiration for his writing, emphasizing the values of fighting against injustice, tyranny, and championing the cause of the oppressed.
Dr. Abdul Karim’s educational journey began at Independence Primary and Secondary School in Freetown, Sierra Leone, before he immigrated to the United States and became a naturalized citizen. In the U.S., he attained an Associate degree from Northern Virginia Community College in 1978, followed by a Bachelor’s and a Master’s of Arts from American University, Washington, D.C., in 1982. Subsequently, in 1983, he received a Master of Science degree from Stockholm University in Sweden.
His academic pursuits continued with a Doctor of Philosophy degree from Howard University, a Master of Science in Linguistics from Georgetown University, a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Political Sciences from the University of Maryland, and a Diploma in computer programming from Foley-Belsaw Institute. Dr. Abdul Karim also holds Doctor of Philosophy degrees in Development Economics, Computer Science from Columbus University, New Orleans, and Mathematics.
