The Woven Path Begins in Makeni: Preserving Sierra Leone’s Traditional Weaving Heritage One Thread at a Time

Posted on June 26, 2026June 26, 2026 By CM N

We Are in Makeni – The Journey Has Officially Begun

The first chapter of The Woven Path has begun in Makeni, Northern Sierra Leone, where centuries-old weaving traditions continue to shape communities, preserve identity, and tell stories that have been passed down through generations.

This marks the beginning of an inspiring nationwide cultural journey led by Creative Media Network SL, celebrating the artistry, knowledge, and resilience of Sierra Leone’s master weavers.

As the looms begin to move and the rhythm of weaving fills the air, we are reminded that every thread carries a story, every pattern holds meaning, and every artisan is a guardian of our shared cultural heritage.

What is The Woven Path?

The Woven Path is a cultural documentation and artistic research project by Creative Media Network SL, proudly supported through the Culture Moves Salone Mobility Fund 2, funded by the European Union through KEA European Affairs.

The project seeks to document, preserve, and celebrate Sierra Leone’s rich weaving traditions by working directly with local artisans across the country’s regions.

Through:

  • Artistic research
  • Documentary filmmaking
  • Photography
  • Oral history interviews
  • Community collaboration

The project will capture the techniques, stories, and cultural significance behind traditional weaving, ensuring this invaluable knowledge is preserved for future generations.

Why Makeni?

Makeni is more than our first destination, it is a place where craftsmanship, creativity, and cultural identity remain deeply woven into everyday life.

Here, master artisans continue to practice traditional weaving techniques that reflect generations of skill, patience, and cultural pride.

By documenting these living traditions, we are helping ensure that these remarkable stories are not lost but instead shared with audiences across Sierra Leone and around the world.

Preserving More Than Cloth

Traditional weaving is more than the creation of beautiful textiles.

It is history.

It is identity.

It is storytelling.

Every woven piece represents the knowledge of ancestors, the creativity of communities, and the enduring spirit of Sierra Leone’s cultural heritage.

The Woven Path aims to honor these artisans by placing their voices, experiences, and craftsmanship at the heart of the project.

A Journey Across Sierra Leone

Makeni is only the beginning.

Over the coming days, The Woven Path will travel across Sierra Leone, documenting diverse weaving traditions, meeting remarkable artisans, and uncovering the unique stories that connect our people.

Each community contributes a different pattern, technique, and perspective—but together they form one beautiful national story.

Celebrating Our Shared Heritage

This project is more than cultural documentation.

It is a celebration of Sierra Leone’s creativity, resilience, and identity.

By preserving traditional weaving through film, photography, and community engagement, we hope to inspire young people, support cultural preservation, and encourage greater appreciation for our artistic heritage.

Together, we are ensuring that the wisdom of today’s master weavers continues to inspire tomorrow’s generations.

Follow the Journey

As The Woven Path travels from community to community, we invite everyone to become part of this movement.

Follow our journey.

Share our stories.

Celebrate our artisans.

Help preserve Sierra Leone’s rich cultural heritage.

One People. One Story. Many Traditions.

The Woven Path is proudly implemented by Creative Media Network SL as part of the Culture Moves Salone Mobility Fund 2, funded by the European Union through KEA European Affairs.

Every thread tells a story. Together, we are weaving the future by preserving the past.
